We'll meet at starting point of the Castlemaine Railway Station carpark. The scenery is mostly open dry forest and some un-forested hills and farms, and we'll pass through the historic railway yards at Muckleford.

A V/Line departs Southern Cross at 9:02 am to arrive Castlemaine, 10:28. It's best to be at the station about 20 minutes early just to make sure your bike gets a place on the carriage.

From Castlemaine to Maldon is 18 km, so it's a rail trail we can comfortably do in a day as a 36 km round trip.

The track itself is described by Rail Trails Australia as rough in places but entirely ride-worthy, as long as your bike doesn't have skinny tyres.

Once in Maldon we'll have lunch at The Kangaroo Hotel.
